Bucs' Glazer Family Donates $1M to Support Hurricane Helene Relief Efforts
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced Saturday the Glazer family is donating $1 million to local nonprofits to aid in the Hurricane Helene relief effort.
"We offer our full support to those who have been impacted and are extremely thankful for the heroic and brave efforts of the many first responders and utility workers who have been working tirelessly to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our community during this difficult time," said Darcie Glazer Kassewitz, chairman of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers Foundation.
According to CNN's Dalia Faheid, at least 52 people have died as a result of Helene, which made landfall as a Category 4 hurricane. The state of Florida has confirmed 11 deaths to this point.
The Tampa Bay Times reported how the Tampa Bay area "may have just experienced its most destructive storm on record and yet was also clearly lucky" because it wasn't in the hurricane's direct path. The region has experienced significant flooding, power outages and plumbing issues.
The New York Times reported how some Tampa Bay residents "are wrestling lately with how —or whether—to keep living in a beautiful place that has become vulnerable to more frequent and intense storms as well as rising sea levels." Even when hurricanes have seemingly been a safe distance away, they've been large enough to bring major storm surges.
The Bucs' donation follows a $2 million pledge from the NHL's Tampa Bay Lightning.
