Doug Pederson: 'Everything Is On The Table' amid Trevor Lawrence, Jaguars' Struggles

Mike ChiariSep 24, 2024

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson isn't ruling out any potential changes on the heels of his team's 47-10 blowout loss to the Buffalo Bills on Monday night.

Speaking to reporters after the game, Pederson seemed open to any number of moves to get his team on track, saying: "There has to be changes, whether it's play design, personnel, everything. Everything's on the table, let's call it, and those are all things that I have to look at, we have to look at as a staff and make the adjustments."

Buffalo led 34-3 at halftime, marking the largest halftime deficit in Jaguars franchise history. That allowed the Bills to largely take their foot off the gas in the second half and cruise to victory, dropping the Jags to 0-3 on the season.

Dating back to last season, the Jaguars have now lost eight of their past nine games, while quarterback Trevor Lawrence has lost eight starts in a row.

Despite a late-season collapse in 2023 that saw the Jags finish 9-8 and miss the playoffs, the organization signed Lawrence to a five-year, $275 million contract extension during the offseason, tying him with Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow and Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love as the second-highest-paid player in the NFL in terms of average annual value.

Although the Jaguars made a long-term commitment to Lawrence as the starting quarterback, Pederson did not rule out a potential quarterback change when asked about it Monday, but he also didn't endorse the idea, saying: "You say everything is on the table, we've got to take a look at injury. Tonight, we had some guys injured. Could be moved that way. Could be performance. It's all things we have to evaluate as we move forward."

The 24-year-old Lawrence was widely expected to take a huge step forward last season after a 2022 campaign in which he threw for 4,113 yards, 25 touchdowns and eight interceptions, was named to his first Pro Bowl and helped lead Jacksonville to a playoff win.

Instead, his numbers dipped to 4,016 yards, 21 touchdowns and 14 picks, and the Jaguars' late-season collapse left them outside the postseason.

A bounce back was anticipated in 2024, but that hasn't been the case thus far, as he is completing just 52.8 percent of his passes for 560 yards with two touchdowns and one interception through three games.

Lawrence went 21-of-38 for 178 yards with one touchdown and one interception, and it didn't help that he was without his most trusted target for a second consecutive game in tight end Evan Engram, who was out with a hamstring injury.

The Jags' defense also clearly suffered due to injury, as cornerback Tyson Campbell and safety Andrew Wingard are on injured reserve, while safety Darnell Savage also missed Monday's game.

Bills superstar quarterback Josh Allen took full advantage of Jacksonville being short-handed on the back end, completing 23 of his 30 passing attempts for 263 yards, four touchdowns and no interceptions.

Ultimately, nothing went right for the Jaguars in front of a national audience on Monday night, and given how things ended last season, it is fair to wonder if Pederson's job could be on the line if he isn't able to get things turned around quickly.
