Rory McIlroy Loses BMW PGA Championship; Horschel Wins $1.53M Prize Money in Playoff
Rory McIlroy's bid for the BMW PGA Championship and a $1.53 million prize came up short on Sunday.
The Irish golfer fell short in a playoff for the tournament title, which was won by Billy Horschel. This was the second consecutive tournament where McIlroy fell just short after he came in second in the Irish Open a week ago.
Following the loss, McIlroy said that he was happy with how he is performing and feels ready to keep up the momentum.
"I'm excited for the future," McIlroy said, per the Associated Press. "I'm playing well, I keep giving myself chances ... I just have to dust myself off and get myself ready for the last three events of the year."
For his second-place finish, McIlroy took home $990,000.
It's been a year of close finishes for McIlroy. He did pick up wins at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic in January and the Wells Fargo Championship in May but his runner-up finish in the U.S. Open and the last two tournaments have shown just how close he has been to even more glory.
He reflected on this and acknowledged that he the frequency of coming up a bit short is dissappointing.
"When you get yourself in contention so much, inevitably you're going to have disappointments," McIlroy said, per Ewan Murray of The Guardian. Unfortunately I'm just getting a little too used to feeling what it's like when you do and hopefully that tide will turn."
He will have a little time off before his next tournament. He is scheduled to play next at the Dunhill Links Championship in October, and McIlroy will hope to get back on track with a tournament victory.
