Fantasy Alert: Texans' Joe Mixon Out vs. Vikings in NFL Week 3 With Ankle Injury

Paul KasabianSep 21, 2024

Houston Texans running back Joe Mixon has been downgraded to out for his team's road game against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday with a right ankle injury.

Mixon didn't practice all week and was listed as doubtful before the downgrade. He suffered the injury after a tackle from Chicago Bears linebacker T.J. Edwards in the third quarter of the Texans' 19-13 victory in Week 2 on Sunday. Mixon left for treatment and briefly returned for seven snaps before departing for the remainder of the game.

Texans head coach DeMeco Ryans told reporters afterward that he believed Edwards used the now-banned "hip-drop" tackle on Mixon. No penalty was called at the time, but Edwards was later fined.

Houston has elevated running back J.J. Taylor from the practice squad.

Houston running back Dameon Pierce has already been ruled out (hamstring). The rest of the Texans' depth chart consists of Dare Ogunbowale, Cam Akers and British Brooks.

Akers finished the Bears game with seven carries for 32 yards and one catch for three yards. Ogunbowale had two carries for three yards and two catches for 20 yards.

Per ESPN's Jeremy Fowler, Mixon has a "week-to-week" injury, so Akers and Ogunbowale could be leading the backfield in the near-future.

Up first is the 2-0 Vikings, who have shined on defense thus far (23 points allowed, third-fewest in the NFL). A home game with the 0-2 Jacksonville Jaguars is next, followed by a matchup against the 2-0 Buffalo Bills.
