Steelers' Russell Wilson Says He's 'Gaining Ground' in Injury Recovery: 'I Feel Good'

After missing the first two games of the season due to a calf injury, Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson is making strides toward a return.

The veteran said he feels good and has been more active in practice this week.

"I'm definitely gaining ground. I feel good," Wilson said, per ESPN's Brooke Pryor. "I was able to do a lot more work today, yesterday, so we're getting better every day."

The Steelers brought in Wilson this offseason after a rough two seasons with the Denver Broncos, but Pittsburgh has yet to see the nine-time Pro Bowler in action. The calf injury first came up in early September during training camp after the Steelers named Wilson the Week 1 starter.

In Wilson's absence, Pittsburgh has managed well with Justin Fields, another offseason addition, under center. Fields has 273 passing yards and a touchdown along with 84 yards on the ground, leading the Steelers to two wins to start the year. He's yet to throw an interception through the first two games of the season, a first for the fourth-year player.

"What's been very encouraging to me is his pocket presence," head coach Mike Tomlin said Thursday. "He's stood in there when the pocket gets dirty. He's made some big throws down the field. I'm very encouraged."

To say that the Steelers offense has been outstanding through Weeks 1 and 2 would be generous, but they're doing enough to get wins, which is no small feat with a new quarterback who struggled over the past three seasons.

While Wilson indicated his return could come soon, Tomlin clarified on Tuesday that Pittsburgh will stick with Fields under center this week.

"Really, we're kind of in the same posture as we were in last week with Russ," Tomlin told reporters. "As I sit here today, Russ is not scheduled to be a full participant in practice, and so we're readying a plan that features Justin and his readiness."

While the plan coming into the year was to have Wilson start for the Steelers, Fields' strong start to the year could make the decision to pull him in favor of Wilson when he's healthy a bit more difficult.
