NFL Rumors: Ryan Tannehill Eyes Super Bowl, Money amid Packers' Jordan Love's Injury

Scott PolacekSep 8, 2024

Ryan Tannehill is reportedly waiting for the perfect situation if he is going to sign with an NFL team this season.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported Sunday that "it would take a playoff contender in need of a quarterback, a team with a strong offensive line and offensive weapons" when discussing what it would take to sign the veteran quarterback. What's more, Rapoport noted "the money also would have to be right."

This comes as one of the NFL's high-profile teams has a temporary opening at quarterback after Jordan Love suffered a sprained MCL during Friday's loss to the Philadelphia Eagles that NFL Network's Tom Pelissero reported could sideline him for three-to-six weeks.

The Packers are coming off a playoff appearance and had high expectations at the start of the year, although Love's injury could alter that trajectory.

But it is a situation that sounds similar to a hypothetical Tannehill described in July during an appearance on The Athletic's Scoop City (h/t John Glennon of the Nashville Post) when discussing what it might take to get him to return to the field.

"Whether that's training camp, maybe a guy goes down on a team and [the team] gives me a call, you never know what's going to happen," he said. "So, just keeping the options open. But at the same time, not waiting on pins and needles for that call, right? I'm enjoying where I'm at, enjoying where my feet are at, where my family life is. If something comes up, then fantastic, I'll jump wholeheartedly into it. But at the same time, not clearly just waiting on that."

While Tannehill is 36 years old and didn't participate in training camp for a team, Rapoport reported he has remained in shape in part by throwing to local receivers.

And he isn't far removed from playing considering he appeared in 10 games with eight starts last season for the Tennessee Titans. He completed 64.8 percent of his passes for 1,616 yards, four touchdowns and seven interceptions in that playing time while going 3-5 as a starter.

The numbers are rather uninspiring, but this is also the same quarterback who led the Titans to three straight playoff appearances during the 2019, 2020 and 2021 seasons. He was a Pro Bowler and the Comeback Player of the Year in 2019 and is accustomed to playing on teams with high expectations.

If he did join a talented team like the Packers, he'd likely be tasked with playing more of a point guard role where he just gets the ball into the playmakers' hands.

Between running back Josh Jacobs and wide receivers Jayden Reed, Romeo Doubs and Christian Watson, there are enough pieces in place to keep the offense afloat even with Love sidelined. Having a veteran like Tannehill who would know not to force poor throws and allow those players to make plays could help.

For now, Green Bay is set to rely on Malik Willis, who is yet to live up to expectations since he was a third-round pick in 2022 with zero touchdown passes and three interceptions in 12 games and three starts.

The NFC North team may have a decision to make ahead of its Week 2 game against the Indianapolis Colts.
