
Richard Aspinwall, Apalachee HSFB DC, Dies at Age 39 in Georgia School Shooting
Richard Aspinwall, an assistant coach for the Apalachee High School football team, was one of four people killed Wednesday in a mass shooting at the school.
The Apalachee football team posted a statement on X about Aspinwall:
Apalachee High School is located in Winder, Georgia. Mountain View High School, where Aspinwall previously worked, posted a statement on its Facebook page:
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of former Mountain View High School teacher and coach Ricky Aspinwall, who lost his life at Apalachee High School today. Mountain View extends its deepest condolences to the entire Apalachee High School community. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all during this tragic time."
Aspinwall, 39, was a defensive coordinator for the football team. He is also listed as a math teacher at the school on the Barrow County Schools website.
Per CNN.com, the suspect is a 14-year-old student who allegedly opened fire in the school using an AR-15-style rifle on Wednesday, and police first received reports of the shooting around 10:20 a.m. local time. Two 14-year-old students and two teachers—including Aspinwall—were killed in the shooting.
Nine other people—eight students, one teacher—were hospitalized with injuries. All of them are expected to survive. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said the suspect will be charged with murder and tried as an adult, per CNN.
Monroe High School's football team, which was scheduled to play against Apalachee on Friday night, announced the game has been canceled.
