On Early National Signing Day, Clemson and Florida Came Out Winners
It's a tradition that at the U.S. Army All American Bowl and now at the Under Armour High School All America Game that some of the nation's finest announce their college plans.
We've seen stars like Adrian Peterson, Ted Ginn, and Tim Tebow do it and each year a lucky group of 8-12 players get the honor.
This year seven men were able to announce to the world where they will play in college. I evaluate the winners and losers.
WINNERS
Florida
Urban Meyer could not have asked for a better day: Jon Bostic and Xavier Nixon. The Gators potentially picked up 2 players who could be 3-4 year starters.
Bostic, a 4-star linebacker at 6-foot-2 with 4.5 speed is a ferocious hitter with great athleticism and size. He needs to to be more aggressive at times, but learning from a guy like Brandon Spikes will help.
Nixon, the No. 1 tackle prospect, might be the crown jewel of this Gator class. At 6-foot-6, 275 pounds, Nixon has unbelievable athleticism. He has great footwork and long arms to help in the run game.
He needs to work a bit on pass block, but since he'll likely redshirt he could have an Andre Smith-type impact for the Gators. The Gators did lose Michael Carter to West Virginia, but they are pretty sound and they might haul in two or three more players at the Under Armour game.
Clemson
All week long, we heard that Clemson was going to get a "big" recruit at the game, and they sure did, getting Bryce McNeal.
Early on in the week there was a quiet buzz that NcNeal along with Tajh Boyd and Cliff Harris were Oregon bound, but McNeal strength end the Tigers class and could possibly land them more big time names. Tajh Boyd wants to play with Mcneal and he may as well now come to Death Valley to run Dabo Swinney's spread. They did lose out on Xavier Nixon but they were not expecting to get him.
Michigan: The Wolverines needed William Campbell to stay home and they were able to do so. Campbell, who earlier in the week seemed to be LSU's to lose surprised many recruiting experts picking the Maize and Blue. Michigan who has had trouble keeping the top in state talent home (Joseph Barksdale to LSU, Ronald Johnson and Nick Perry to USC, Dionte Jones to Florida State) got a huge boost as they were able to keep the top instate prospect home. Campbell could have a huge impact next year as Tim Jamison and Terrance Taylor could both leave making him a Day 1 starter. He has unbelievable size and strength and if he works on his technique and develops a go-to move he could be the next great Michigan DT following in the footsteps of Gabe Watson and Alan Branch.
LOSERS:
Oregon: The Ducks may have seen their opportunity for a top 15 class slip away. The week started off badly when Diante Jackson, one of the top wideouts in the west, decommitted and committed to Colorado. Oregon really expected to get Mcneal and were disappointed when they didn't. They may have well missed their chance for Tajh Boyd, though he could still come to Oregon, but the chances aren't as high as they once were. They did come out with some good news as Adam Hall didn't commit to Arizona like everyone expected but decided to visit Oregon before making his decision, but Oregon lost McNeal and possibly Boyd and Cliff Harris too.
Minnesota: Talk about heartbreak, the Gophers lost two commits they should of had. They let top state talent Bryce McNeal leave the state for Clemson, and then lost Michael Carter to West Virginia. To make matters worse, Daryl Robinson, the former MAC Freshmen of the year at Temple who is spending the year at Junior college decommitted. Oh and the Gophers also got smoked by the Kansas Jayhawks in the Insight Bowl. It truly was a bad week for the Minneosta football program
