Dalvin Cook to Wear No. 20 Jersey with Cowboys After Signing Contract in NFL FA

Zach BacharAug 29, 2024

Dalvin Cook will wear No. 20 for the Dallas Cowboys during the 2024 season, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

The four-time Pro Bowl running back signed with the Cowboys as a free agent on Wednesday and will start on their practice squad as he ramps up for the regular season, according to Nick Harris of the team's official website.

2024 will mark the first season of Cook's career that he wears No. 20, as he wore No. 33 and No. 31 with the New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens in 2023-24, respectively. He previously wore No. 4 as a member of the Minnesota Vikings during his 2022 season, although the number already belongs to Cowboys signal-caller Dak Prescott.

Cook also wore the number during his college days at Florida State before he was eventually selected by the Vikings with a second-round pick in the 2017 NFL draft.

The 29-year-old earned his last Pro Bowl nod in 2022, but his tumultuous 2023 campaign cast doubt on his ability to return to form. He joined the Jets on a one-year deal in Aug. 2023, quickly falling behind Breece Hall on the team's depth chart.

He appeared in 15 games with just one start, recording 214 yards on 67 carries for a career-low 3.2 yards per attempt. Cook signed with the Ravens ahead of the playoffs, appearing in just one of their two postseason games. He racked up a mere 23 yards on eight carries in the playoffs.

If or when he moves up from the practice squad, he would be expected to split carries with Ezekiel Elliott in Dallas' backfield after the team brought back the veteran in free agency on April 29. Tony Pollard, the Cowboys' 2023 starter, joined the Tennessee Titans as a free agent in March.

Cook and Elliott will spearhead a Dallas rushing attack that ranked No. 14 among all NFL teams in average yards per game last season.
