Cowboys' Jerry Jones: 'Not Realistic' Dak Prescott Will Get Contract Before Week 1

Scott PolacekAug 28, 2024

Dak Prescott is about to start the final season of his current contract, but Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones doesn't seem to be in a hurry to sign him to a new one.

"We don't need to get this done before the season," Jones told Clarence Hill of DLLS. "We just don't need to get it done before the season. Because it's in all of our interest, Dak and everybody, to have a great season. And as a matter of fact, that's probably not realistic to think before the season. But my thought sitting right here is we'll have Dak [as Cowboys quarterback in 2025 and beyond]. But all I'm gonna say is this: it's not done yet."

To say Prescott has all the leverage would be an understatement.

After all, he has a no tag clause and a no trade clause. What's more, the Cowboys just signed CeeDee Lamb to a four-year, $136 million extension and surely don't want to commit that much to a wide receiver without locking down their franchise quarterback as well.

Hill suggested Prescott "will soon be the highest paid player in NFL history, either with the Cowboys or with another team" and said the baseline for a deal will be $55 million per year.

While Jones said he believes the team will eventually get something done with Prescott, it's not the first time this offseason he hasn't been in a hurry. He told reporters earlier this month, "I don't have any urgency to get it done," when talking about Lamb's contract.

That inspired a response from the wide receiver:

Yet the Cowboys did ultimately get that one done before the season.

It is fair to wonder if Prescott is the quarterback who can elevate Dallas into the postseason. While he has largely thrived during the regular season, the team has not advanced past the second round of the playoffs during his time under center.

He is also just 2-5 in playoff starts, although Jones is still confident.

"Yes, there is no question in my mind. Yes, we can win with Dak," he said. "It's just not a question in my mind."

That may be the case, but this could be something of a prove-it year for the quarterback if the two sides don't come to terms on a deal before the season. If he falls short in the playoffs yet again, he and the Cowboys might both look in different directions.
