Video: Alabama HSFB Game Ends on Hail Mary as Teams Combine for Record 147 Points
In a game that could have been created from the Sickos Committee lab, Ohatchee defeated New Hope 76-71 on a Hail Mary as time expired in the highest-scoring non-overtime game in AHSAA history.
Ohatchee quarterback Jake Roberson's prayer from New Hope's 37-yard line was answered when Brayden Collins hauled in the pass after it was batted into the air for the game-winning score.
Per Thomas Ashworth of AL.com, the 147 combined points broke the Alabama High School Athletic Association record for most points in a non-overtime game. The previous record of 146 points was set in 2016 when Childersburg defeated Coosa Christian by a final score of 82-64.
Hunter Shelton of On3.com noted the only game in AHSAA history with more points was Central-Hayneville's 78-72 triple-overtime win over Billingsley in 2023.
Ohatchee head coach Chris Findley told Ashworth he has "never been part of anything like that before" following his team's win.
"We obviously played really well offensively, really bad defensively, and they can probably say the same. It was up and down," Findley said. "I'm really pleased with the offense, and I'm like, 'Man, we've got to fix some stuff on defense."
Before Ohatchee pulled off a miracle at the end, New Hope looked like it was going to steal the win. Ohatchee led by as many as 16 points in the fourth quarter and held a 70-56 lead with 2:56 remaining in regulation.
Dawson Cambron caught a 54-yard touchdown pass 34 seconds later to get New Hope within seven points. Layton Pohl recovered the onside kick and later scored on a nine-yard touchdown run with 1:08 left on the clock.
New Hope quarterback Lucas Terry caught the two-point conversion on a Philly Special-style double-reverse pass from Cambron for a 71-70 lead.
The Ohatchee offense gained possession at its own 24-yard line and proceeded to gain 44 yards in three plays with a delay-of-game penalty mixed in before the game-winning pass from Roberson to Collins.
The two teams combined for a total of 54 points in the first half, which is a high total but nothing that would indicate they were going to have a historic scoring output. They nearly matched their first-half point total in the third quarter alone with 52 combined points.
