Historic Baseball Field from 'A League of Their Own' Burns Down After Fire
A California baseball field featured in several movies including the 1992 film A League of Their Own burned down Thursday night, Tony Cabrera reported for ABC7.
The fire began at Jay Littleton Ball Park in Ontario around 11:30 p.m, according to Cabrera.
Responders from the Ontario Fire Department encountered "heavy smoke and fire from the stadium and the dugout when they arrived," Tony Kurzweil reported for KTLA 4. No injuries were reported, per Cabrera.
The cause of the fire is not yet known, and arson investigators were at the park on Friday, Cabrera reported.
Jay Littleton Ball Park has been in continuous use since the park was first constructed in 1936, according to the California Preservation Foundation. The venue featured a wooden grandstand built in 1937.
The ballpark was used as a set for A League of Their Own starring Tom Hanks. The venue was also featured in the 1988 drama Eight Men Out, the 1992 film The Babe and a 1999 episode of The X-Files.
Jay Littleton Ball Park hosted a professional team for one season when the Sunset League's Ontario Orioles played at the park in 1947.
The venue was named after local baseball figure Joe "Jay" Littleton in 1998 and designated a historic landmark in 2003. The field was most recently in use as a venue for "little leagues and other amateur leagues," according to the City of Ontario.
