Yankees' Luis Gil Placed on 15-Day IL with Back Injury; Will Warren Recalled

Paul KasabianAug 21, 2024

The New York Yankees announced that they have placed right-handed starting pitcher Luis Gil on the 15-day injured list with a lower back strain. In a corresponding move, right-handed starter Will Warren has been called up from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Gil left his start against the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday in the fourth inning. Larry Fleisher of the Associated Press provided more details.

"After throwing an 89 mph changeup to Jose Ramírez, the right-hander called for an athletic trainer. Following a brief meeting on the mound that included New York manager Aaron Boone, Gil was replaced by Tim Hill. Before his final delivery, Gil allowed a homer to Brayan Rocchio and walked Steven Kwan on four pitches."

Gil told reporters through a translator postgame that he began experiencing discomfort during the third inning: "I never felt anything like that. You're a little worried because you're coming out of the game because you're feeling something that's not right. But at the same time, we've just got to take it day by day and see how I feel tomorrow."

The 26-year-old Gil is 12-6 with a 3.39 ERA (1.20 WHIP) over 25 starts (124.2 innings). He has thrown 144 strikeouts and walked 66 batters.

Warren now makes his return to the rotation after previously making his debut on July 30 when Gerrit Cole was scratched (body fatigue) against the Philadelphia Phillies.

The 25-year-old kept the Yanks in the game against the Phils, striking out six over 5.1 innings while allowing four earned runs in a 7-6 victory (12 innings).

His next start, against the Los Angeles Angels on Aug. 7, did not go well. Warren allowed eight earned runs and eight hits while walking three over 4.1 innings in an 8-2 loss.

He saved his best for last in his first trip to the bigs, though, allowing two earned runs and seven hits while striking out five over five innings in a 10-2 win over the Chicago White Sox.

Granted, the White Sox are a historically bad team at 30-97, but Warren can certainly parlay a good outing into positive momentum for his second go-around in the bigs. His next turn on the bump will be Sunday at home against the Colorado Rockies.
