"I don't have much to comment on it until that comes out from the league," head coach Brian Callahan told reporters at the time. "It's not something that you want to hear, but we don't have a choice. We have to go play football with what we have."
Key, 28, emerged as a solid edge-rusher for the Titans last season, notching 30 tackles, six sacks, two forced fumbles, four tackles for loss and 12 quarterback hits. After bouncing around between the Las Vegas Raiders, San Francisco 49ers and Jacksonville Jaguars across his first five seasons, the former LSU man signed a three-year, $21 million deal with the Titans ahead of the 2023 campaign.
He'll combine with Harold Landry on the edge and Simmons up the middle to give the Titans a solid pass rush. He was expected to play an even more important role in 2024, however, after the team's leader in sacks last year, Denico Autry (11.5), signed with the Houston Texans this offseason.
Autry is facing a six-game PED suspension of his own, though he denied using any banned substances in a statement.
"Over the course of my ten-year NFL career, I have never engaged in the use of performance enhancing drugs," he said. "Over that period, I have been subject to countless tests, none of which have ever returned a positive result. I was, therefore, stunned this offseason when I learned that one of my tests returned a positive result."
Autry added that he "discovered that a pharmacy to which my doctors submitted a prescription for a different medication had, whether intentionally, recklessly, or negligently, included a banned substance," which resulted in the positive test.
As for the Titans, losing Key would have been a major blow. The team doesn't have many solid options behind him and Landry, with players like Rashad Weaver, rookie Jaylen Harrell and Shane Ray jockeying for spots on the depth chart.
