Connor Stalions Lands HSFB Coaching Job After Michigan Sign-Stealing Scandal
Disgraced former University of Michigan football staffer Connor Stalions has landed a new position in the high school football ranks.
William McMichael, who is the head football coach at Samuel C. Mumford High School in Detroit, told David Goricki of the Detroit News on Friday that he hired Stalions to his staff, saying: "I got the most hated man in college football right now, Connor Stalions. He's my defensive coordinator."
Stalions resigned from his position at Michigan in November after an NCAA investigation determined that he spearheaded a scheme that involved him and others illegally scouting future opponents by attending their games in person.
While the crux of the operation reportedly featured Stalions and other staffers recording the sidelines of future opponents in an attempt to gather information regarding signs, there is at least some belief that Stalions was on the sidelines for a game involving Central Michigan.
ESPN's Dan Murphy and Pete Thamel reported this month that an NCAA notice of allegations stated there is evidence showing that Stalions was on the sidelines for a CMU game, wearing CMU gear and a disguise.
As a result of Stalions' actions, then-Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh was suspended for the final three regular-season games in 2023 despite him denying any involvement.
The Wolverines still went undefeated and won the national championship, but Harbaugh departed at the end of the season to become the head coach of the Los Angeles Chargers.
Last week, the NCAA levied a four-year show-cause order against Harbaugh for having impermissible contact with recruits during the COVID-19 "dead period." The NCAA alleged that Harbaugh "engaged in unethical conduct, failed to promote an atmosphere of compliance and violated head coach responsibility obligations."
Sherrone Moore, who was the Wolverines' offensive coordinator last season, as well as their acting head coach when Harbaugh was suspended, is now the new head coach at Michigan.
However, Moore was named in the notice of allegations and could face a show-cause penalty of his own for allegedly "deleting a thread of 52 text messages" he had with Stalions, which is a Level 2 violation.
Stalions has yet to speak publicly about the scouting scandal, but according to Goricki, he was interviewed by Netflix for the upcoming documentary entitled Sign Stealer, which will drop on Aug. 27.
