Video: Patriots RB Stevenson Misinterprets Judon Trade Q&A; Talks Belichick, Mayo

Adam WellsAug 16, 2024

New England Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson was involved in an awkward sideline interview in the third quarter of Thursday's preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Stevenson interpreted a question from WBZ's Steve Burton "about the guy who just left" to be about former head coach Bill Belichick and responded by saying he misses him before calling new head coach Jerod Mayo "a great leader."

Burton later clarified he was asking about Matthew Judon, who was traded to the Atlanta Falcons on Thursday, leading to another awkward moment when Burton said he was "moving on to better places" before amending that to "at least a different place.

Stevenson agreed with Burton's assessment that Atlanta is "a different place" than New England, adding he is "excited" for Judon to get a fresh start.

Burton, who is WBZ-TV's sports director, was primarily at fault for this situation because he didn't use any names in asking the question. He referred to Judon as "the guy who just left" on first mention and "your defensive teammate" when clarifying his question before Stevenson finally said his name.

It's an easy mix-up for Stevenson because the biggest storyline for the Patriots since January has been about Mayo taking over as head coach after Belichick's historic 24-year run with the franchise.

Stevenson did have high praise for Mayo when talking about his new head coach.

"I miss Bill," Stevenson said. "That was one of my favorite coaches. But, you know, Mayo, he's a great leader. He knows what he's doing with us. I'm excited for Mayo and I think we can get it done with him."

The Judon situation came to a head this week after he caused a stir during Patriots' training camp over unhappiness with his contract. It was certainly a notable story that they decided to trade their best pass-rusher less than one month before the start of the season and worth asking about.

Stevenson, to his credit, was able to handle things very well. He gave very standard, generic answers that won't really cause anyone to think twice. It just came off very awkward because of how the questions were posed.
