J.J. McCarthy's Season-Ending Injury Leaves Vikings Fans Lamenting Kirk Cousins' Exit
Minnesota Vikings fans were dealt a devastating blow on Wednesday when it was announced that rookie quarterback J.J. McCarthy will miss the entire 2024 season after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus.
To make matters worse, the Vikings lost a Pro Bowl quarterback earlier this offseason when Kirk Cousins opted to sign with the Atlanta Falcons, leaving Minnesota fans wishing they could have him back in the wake of the McCarthy news:

Projecting Every NFL Team's Starting Lineup 🔮
Cousins starred for the Vikings for the last six seasons, earning three of his four career Pro Bowl selections during that span. His tenure with the team ended unceremoniously when he suffered a torn Achilles in Week 8 of the 2023 season. He had been off to a strong start to the year with 2,331 yards, 18 touchdowns and just five interceptions.
After losing Cousins, Minnesota pivoted by selecting McCarthy with the No. 10 pick in April's draft. The 21-year-old had an impressive showing in his preseason debut on Saturday against the Las Vegas Raiders, completing 11 of his 17 passes for 188 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Unfortunately, he experienced knee discomfort after the game, and an MRI determined that surgery would be required.
Without McCarthy, the Vikings are depending on Sam Darnold as their starting quarterback for the 2024 season. The former No. 3 draft pick has had an inconsistent career, but perhaps he will fare better on a Minnesota team that has one of the best wide receivers in the NFL in Justin Jefferson.
Meanwhile, Cousins is set to lead a Falcons team that is hungry to end a six-year playoff drought. With a bevy of offensive talent surrounding him like running back Bijan Robinson, wide receiver Drake London and tight end Kyle Pitts, the 35-year-old could thrive in his new surroundings.
The 2024 season could be tough for Vikings fans to watch as Cousins tries to lead the Falcons back to prominence.
