Video: Colorado's Deion Sanders Feels 'Much Better' About Team Ahead of 2nd Season
Colorado head coach Deion Sanders said he feels "much better" about his team this offseason following their 0-6 finish to the 2023 campaign.
"I feel much better about the team now, because of the young energy accumulated inside this locker room, but also the staff, and how they're working together," Sanders told reporters Friday, per Fox31 Denver KDVR's Taylor Kilgore.
"The coordinators are phenomenal. The support staff is second to none. I feel, I think, we all really have a cohesive bond that's truly admirable."
The Buffaloes, which hired Sanders following the team's 1-11 finish to the 2022 season, got off to an encouraging 4-2 start to the new head coach's first campaign in Boulder.
But weaknesses, including offensive line struggles, led to the team's collapse at the end of the season and Sanders' decision to revamp the team's coordinator roles.
Since then Sanders has announced the permanent hiring of offensive coordinator Pat Shurmur, who took over the role for the final four games of the 2023 campaign, as well as Robert Livingston as defensive coordinator.
Both Shurmur and Livingston enter the roles with NFL experience. Shurmur coached the Cleveland Browns, Philadelphia Eagles and New York Giants between 2011 and 2019, while worked for the Bengals staff from 2012 to 2023.
Sanders also added offensive line coach Phil Loadholt and receivers coach Jason Phillips to the staff this offseason.
Members of the coaching staff won't be the only change on Colorado's roster this fall. The program's 43-player incoming transfer class is ranked as the eight-strongest in college football by 247Sports.
Together with a potential step forward from his son, quarterback Shedeur Sanders, Sanders will hope this new staff and roster is enough to push the Buffaloes toward the program's first winning season since 2016.
