Brandon Aiyuk Trade Rumors: 49ers Not Satisfied with Steelers' Offers; SF Seeks a WR

Adam WellsAug 7, 2024

Even though the list of potential trade suitors for Brandon Aiyuk appears to be dwindling, the San Francisco 49ers aren't budging on their asking price for the star wide receiver.

Per The Athletic's Dianna Russini, Matt Barrows and Mike DeFabo, the 49ers "haven't been satisfied" with the offers they have received from the Pittsburgh Steelers and they want to get a receiver back in order to move Aiyuk.

Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette added there is no verbal agreement in place between the Steelers and 49ers for Aiyuk, nor are they in the process of finalizing details. He added that any potential deal "would NOT involve" Pittsburgh sending a player to the Niners.

The Steelers, Cleveland Browns, Washington Commanders and New England Patriots have popped up as potential landing spots for Aiyuk if he were to get traded.

Per NBC Sports Bay Area's Matt Maiocco, the 49ers and Patriots had an agreement in place but Aiyuk "did not show interest" in playing for New England.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported on Tuesday the Patriots have ended their pursuit of Aiyuk.

Maiocco previously reported on Monday the Commanders removed themselves from trade talks, but the 49ers and Browns had the framework of a trade in place. The 49ers would receive Amari Cooper from the Browns if the two teams agreed to a deal, per ESPN's Jeff Darlington.

In the midst of all the trade talk going on, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan told reporters on Tuesday they haven't ruled out keeping Aiyuk but had no timetable for a resolution either way.

If the Steelers are the last potential landing spot still standing for Aiyuk, it could be difficult for the 49ers to get a receiver back in return who could make a significant impact for their offense.

George Pickens is the best wideout on Pittsburgh's roster, but it wouldn't make much sense to include him in a deal for Aiyuk. The receivers behind him include Van Jefferson, Calvin Austin III, Roman Wilson, Scotty Miller and Dez Fitzpatrick.

Since the 49ers still have a roster looking to compete for a Super Bowl this season, it wouldn't make sense for them to deal Aiyuk at this point in the offseason without getting a player who can make a strong and positive impact.

Aiyuk is entering the final season of his rookie deal with a $14.1 million salary. He's coming off the best season of his career with 1,342 yards and seven touchdowns in 2023.
