Jets' Mike Williams Activated off PUP amid Knee Injury Recovery; Eligible to Practice

The New York Jets have moved one step closer to having a fully healthy offensive unit.

The team announced on Wednesday that veteran wide receiver Mike Williams has been activated off the physically unable to perform list and is now eligible to practice as he continues to progress in his recovery from a torn ACL that forced him to miss 14 games in 2023.

Williams, who spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Los Angeles Chargers, tore his ACL in a Week 3 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. Before going down, he hauled in seven catches for 121 yards and a touchdown to help the Chargers defeat the Vikings 28-24.

The Jets signed Williams to a one-year contract in March, and he told reporters in June that he expected to be recovered in time for the start of the 2024 season. New York will play its opener on Monday Night Football against the San Francisco 49ers on Sept. 9.

"For the season, for sure," Williams said at the time about when he would be ready to play. "That's my goal to be able to go out there, play this season and give it my all, give this team a chance, win the big thing."

The No. 7 pick in the 2017 draft, Williams has established himself as one of the best deep-ball threats in the league. He has a career average of 15.6 yards per reception and is known for using his physicality to make tough catches.

Williams will bring a different dimension to a Jets receiving corps that is led by rising star Garrett Wilson. Star quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who also had his 2023 campaign cut short by a torn Achilles, will undoubtedly enjoy having multiple talented weapons at his disposal as the Jets try to end their 13-year playoff drought this year.
