NBA Rumors: Steph Curry, Draymond Don't Want to Be 'Final Decision-Makers' on Moves

Adam WellsAug 7, 2024

Stephen Curry and Draymond Green don't have an issue being included in any potential roster moves the Golden State Warriors might make, but there is a limit to how involved they want to be.

Per ESPN's Kendra Andrews, Curry and Green would like to be consulted on any decisions but they don't want to be "final decision-makers" for roster moves.

"Steph has said, 'Look, I do not want to be making those decisions. It puts me in a different spot than all of my teammates. I do not want that,'" one source told Andrews.

It's not uncommon in the NBA for star players to have some involvement in key decisions that a team might make.

ESPN's Dave McMenamin reported during the 2023-24 season that LeBron James and Anthony Davis were consulted by then-Los Angeles Lakers head coach Darvin Ham about switching up the lineup by moving D'Angelo Russell to the bench.

There is a line that some players want to draw. When the Lakers were searching for a new head coach this offseason, James reportedly kept a distance from that process.

As the Warriors went through the decision-making process about Klay Thompson's future this summer, The Athletic's Anthony Slater reported it was Thompson who requested to Curry that he not "exert his significant organizational influence and up the temperature with management to ensure Thompson's return."

The result was that Thompson left Golden State to join the Dallas Mavericks in a sign-and-trade deal.

Even though the Warriors lost a franchise icon, their front office has made some nice moves this offseason to fill out the depth around Curry and Green. De'Anthony Melton, Kyle Anderson and Buddy Hield are quality players who bring something different and unique to the table.

If that group can stay healthy and play up to their potential, it will take a tremendous amount of pressure off Curry and Green.

Curry, in particular, seemed to wear down at the end of last season because of how much was on his shoulders. The two-time MVP averaged 23.1 points on 42.3 percent shooting and 5.3 assists per game in 24 starts after the All-Star break.

The Warriors finished as the No. 10 seed in the Western Conference with a 46-36 record, but their season ended with a 118-94 loss to the Sacramento Kings in the play-in tournament.

As long as Curry and Green are healthy and engaged, the Warriors will be competitive in the West.
