Morocco vs. Spain
2 of 3
The most even of the two semifinal match-ups is the showdown between Morocco and Spain.
Spain is a world power who is fresh off a Euro 2024 victory and looking to follow that up with an Olympic gold medal. The Spanish women are still alive in their pursuit of the same, meaning it is still possible that the nation sees both men's and women's teams capture gold in the same Olympics.
The most complete team in the field, Spain looks like the winner here on paper but the Moroccan team boasts a better defense, which was one full display as the Atlas Lions thwarted the American attack in the quarterfinals en route to a 4-0 shut out victory.
Morocco will have the support of the fans, who have packed the stands for each of their match-ups in this tournament, and feel like a team with more momentum entering the home stretch of these Olympic games.
Some of that can be attributed to Soufiane Rahimi, who has found the net five times through four games, a record for goals scored by a Moroccan in the Olympics. Midfielder Amir Richardson has shown excellent ball progression, too, setting his teammates up to score.
Spain has the long and illustrious history, is a powerhouse in the sport, and is considered by many to be an elite force. They showed as much against Japan in the quarterfinals but this Moroccan squad looks like a team that can hang with their more recognizable opponents while also stunting their scoring.
That slight defensive advantage could be the difference in this one.
France vs. Egypt
3 of 3
France has yet to allow a single goal in these Olympics, a staggering statistic given the strength of the field.
On the heels of a contentious battle with Argentina that saw them best their rivals, a stingy defense leads Les Bleus into battle against a gritty Egyptian team that appears outmatched on first look.
France's smothering defense should keep things tight, meaning a single goal here or there could be the difference in the game.
The host country emerged from a group stage that included the United States, Guinea, and New Zealand and the fact that they did not give up a single goal during that play, nor against the aforementioned Argentinians is a testament to the unit head coach Thierry Henry has put on the field.
It is a team that is more than capable of winning the country's first gold medal in men's soccer since 1984 and moves one step closer to doing so with a victory over Egypt Monday.
Egypt is one of the better stories of this Olympics, a team that has not advanced this far in the competition since 1964 and has already beaten Spain in group play. Not as flashy on offense or stout on defense as the other three teams in the semis, they have played with tenacity and grit while led by Ibrahim Adel.
Already further along in the tournament than expected, the Egyptians have nothing to lose and playing with that level of freeness this late in games makes them as dangerous as any team remaining.
Still, the Les Bleus have been the best team in this tournament to this point and it feels rather unlikely that they will concede a goal that costs them a medal.
