Projecting CeeDee Lamb, Brandon Aiyuk's Contracts After Tyreek Hill's Record Deal

Timothy RappAug 3, 2024

The NFL wide receiver market has shifted again.

Miami Dolphins superstar receiver Tyreek Hill agreed to a reworked deal with the team that will pay him $90 million over the next three years, per multiple reports, with $65 million of it guaranteed. That brings his total guaranteed money on his original four-year pact with the team to $106.5 million.

It is the most fully guaranteed money for a receiver in NFL history, though Justin Jefferson's four-year, $140 million extension with the Minnesota Vikings earlier this offseason included $110 million in practical guarantees ($88.7 million was fully guaranteed at signing).

So, the obvious question is this: How will Saturday's news affect the markets of CeeDee Lamb and Brandon Aiyuk as the pair seek extensions this summer?

Probably not much, outside of the guaranteed money involved.

Lamb was always going to push to equal or exceed Jefferson's contract. The two entered the NFL at the same time and have posted very similar production across four seasons:

  • Lamb: 395 catches for 5,145 yards and 32 touchdowns in 66 total games.
  • Jefferson: 392 catches for 5,899 yards and 30 touchdowns in 60 total games.

Now, however, he may also seek to match Hill's guaranteed money. If Dallas thought the price was high before, it's hard to imagine them being thrilled as the market—yet again—shifted under their feet.

Aiyuk is a trickier case. He has back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons at wideout, but he isn't one of the truly elite receivers in the game. From a career production standpoint, he probably aligns more with Philadelphia's DeVonta Smith (three-year, $75 million extension this offseason) or Jaylen Waddle (three years, $84.7 million) than he does with Amon-Ra St. Brown (four years, $120 million).

Given how the market has continued to shift throughout the offseason, however, it wouldn't be surprising if he was seeking a deal closer to Brown than Smith. Hill's restructured contract only made the high-end receiver market more lucrative, though he was swimming in waters a bit deeper than Aiyuk's market was going to test.

Nonetheless, the Cowboys and Niners can't be thrilled with the shifts in the market.
