USA's Kerr: Jrue Holiday Will Return from Ankle Injury for Olympic Knockout Bracket
Jrue Holiday will return for Team USA's quarterfinal game against Brazil on Tuesday after missing Saturday's group stage finale with an ankle injury, head coach Steve Kerr said Saturday (h/t Marc J. Spears of ESPN and Andscape.)
Holiday suffered a rolled ankle during Team USA's Wednesday win over South Sudan.
The injury kept him out of the starting lineup Saturday as the Americans rolled to a 104-83 win over Puerto Rico.
Every member of Team USA other than Holiday played during Saturday's victory, so Kerr should expect a fully healthy lineup heading into the knockout round.
In Holiday's absence Saturday, Anthony Edwards shone with 26 points on 11-of-15 shooting off the bench.
The rest of the scoring was fairly evenly split between Team USA's stars as Jayson Tatum, LeBron James, Joel Embiid, Kevin Durant and Anthony Davis each contributed double-digit point totals.
Holiday's return will offer Team USA more than just more offense to the stacked lineup. He served as one of the Americans' strongest two-way players in wins against Serbia and South Sudan.
That defense could prove crucial to shutting down former NBA player Bruno Caboclo, who racked up 33 points Friday in Brazil's quarterfinals-clinching group stage win over Japan.
Holiday earned a spot in the starting rotation during Team USA's Olympics opener against Serbia alongside Steph Curry, Devin Booker, LeBron James and Joel Embiid.
There Holiday contributed 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-5 from deep. He added four rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Holiday then came off the bench against South Sudan, and despite suffering his ankle injury in the second half finished out the game having contributed five points on 2-of-5 shooting while adding two rebounds, one assist and one block.
Kerr has been rotating Team USA's starting lineup throughout the Olympics, so it is not yet clear if Holiday will get another starting nod against Brazil.
Holiday and Team USA will be heavy favorites to win against Brazil after finishing the group stage with a point differential of plus-64. The Americans need three more wins in order to claim the team's fourth consecutive Olympic gold.
