USA's Noah Lyles and Men's Olympic Track and Field 100m Qualifying Results

Reigning 100 meter world champion Noah Lyles has a new challenger to his goal of winning four gold medals at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Great Britain's Louie Hinchliffe outran Lyles in Saturday's 100 meter heat with a qualifying time of 9.98 seconds, beating the American sprinter's time of 10.04 seconds.

Both men qualified for the quarterfinals.

Lyles said in his post-race interview on NBC that he had underestimated the competition in his 100 meter Olympic debut.

"I felt like my first 10 meters was pretty good," Lyles said, per NBCOlympics.com's Sam Brief. "But I didn't put enough effort on the acceleration. The moment is pretty big. I'm excited. I'm not gonna lie, I downplayed my competitors. It won't happen again. I'm scared for everyone else right now."

Lyles' Team USA teammate Kenneth Bednarek meanwhile tied for the fastest time of the day with a 9.97-second run in his own heat.

USA's Fred Kerley, who won a silver medal in the 2020 Tokyo 100 meter final, also topped the field with a 9.97-second qualifying run.

Lyles said coming into this Olympics that is goal is to become the first sprinter to win four gold medals at the same Games.

He'll have steep competition in the 100 meter after Team USA teammates Bednarek and Kerley finished atop the qualifiers with University of Houston's 100 meter NCAA champion Hinchliffe just behind.

Cameroon's Emmanuel Eseme and Jamaica's Oblique Seville also posted sub-10 second times to lead the qualifying field.

The men's 100 meter semifinal will take place Sunday at 2:05 p.m. ET. The first two finishers in each of three heats, and the next two fastest overall, will advance to the final, which is set to begin Sunday at 3:50 p.m. ET.
