McKeown wrote her own Olympic history with her gold-medal-winning performance on Friday.
McKeown repeated her gold in the 200-meter backstroke in the same week in which she earned her second straight win in the 100-meter backstroke.
With the win, McKeown became the first Australian swimmer to win four individual gold medals. That is a stunning feat given how often the Aussies have won in the pool in Olympic history.
McKeown's gold continued a terrific night for the Aussies. Cameron McEvoy won the men's 50-meter freestyle minutes before her race.
Smith extended her run of silver-medal finishes at the Olympics. The American also finished second in the 100-meter backstroke and 200-meter butterfly at the Paris Games.
Masse won a close race for third over Bacon, who failed to reach the medal podium despite setting the fastest time in qualifying.
Australia now has 10 gold medals at the Summer Olympics, seven of which have come in the pool. The Aussies have three more golds in the pool than the Americans, but the United States has eight more swimming medals overall.
