Kate Douglass won her first-ever Olympic gold medal on Thursday in the women's 200-meter breaststroke.
The 22-year-old American bested two of the most experienced female swimmers at the entire Summer Olympics meet, Lilly King and Tatjana Smith, to claim the gold medal for the United States.

Douglass' win followed her semifinal triumph in which she recorded the fastest time in the event by two-tenths of a second.
Douglass became the fourth American in seven Summer Olympics and the first since Rebecca Soni in 2012 to win gold in the 200-meter breaststroke.
She was faster than Smith and King, who were first and second on the podium in Tokyo.
After a fast start, Douglass led at the halfway point and held off a push from Smith on the final stretch to win gold.
