Eagles' Biggest Questions to Answer in 2024 NFL Preseason

Joe TanseyAug 1, 2024

The Philadelphia Eagles have some incredible top-end talent on offense, but there is a large drop off at certain positions.

That is most apparent at wide receiver, where A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith will earn a bulk of the targets from Jalen Hurts.

The No. 3 wide receiver, however, is a big concern in preseason. The Eagles have a few decent options, but none of them stand out as a clear-cut No. 3 yet.

Philadelphia's coaching staff will pay close attention to another spot on offense, right guard, as training camp goes on.

Mekhi Becton could win the job away from Tyler Steen in one of the tightest positional competitions of training camp.

On defense, the Eagles seem to have sorted out their secondary issues from the second half of last season, but what they do with James Bradberry still remains a question.

Which Players Lands No. 3 Wide Receiver Spot?

Parris Campbell, Ainias Smith, John Ross and Britain Covey are in the mix for the No. 3 wide receiver spot.

That's not exactly the most inspiring quartet to choose from in the race to land snaps behind A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith.

Campbell, who has a connection with head Nick Sirianni from their time in Indianapolis, has one season with more than 200 receiving yards.

Ross is trying to revive his career. If it works, the Eagles could have a speed demon in the slot, but it's still a big risk.

Smith, a fifth-round pick in 2024, may have the biggest opportunity in front of him because the Eagles staff may be more willing to give a rookie with potential more snaps.

Covey has been the Eagles' return man in recent years, but if he impresses at wide receiver, he might be used on more than just special teams.

One thing is clear with the Eagles: they need at least one, and probably two, of those players to step up in preseason so they feel comfortable with their depth at wide receiver going into the regular season.

Can Mekhi Becton Win Right Guard Starting Spot?

The Eagles' most intriguing competition for a starting role comes at right guard.

Mekhi Becton is looking to resurrect his career after a disappointing few years with the New York Jets.

Becton has been taking snaps at right guard since Tyler Steen went down with an ankle injury.

Steen is the projected starter at right guard, but Becton could some pressure on that position with an impressive preseason.

Even if Becton does not win the job, he is showcasing his versatility to the Eagles coaching staff and that could help later on in the regular season.

How Will James Bradberry Fit in Defense?

The Eagles have moved James Bradberry to safety.

Bradberry struggled on plenty of occasions at cornerback at the end of the 2023 season.

The Eagles drafted Quinyon Mitchell in the first round and have Kelee Ringo and Eli Ricks backing him and Darius Slay up at corner now.

Bradberry is currently behind C.J. Gardner-Johnson and Reed Blankenship on the safety depth chart. His roster spot could be in jeopardy if the Eagles do not see enough out of him.

An argument can be made that Bradberry has the most to prove in preseason among any Eagles player because of how badly he played in 2023.

It would be wise for the Eagles to keep him on the roster in case an injury happens, but that's only if he shows improvement compared to his failures in 2023.
