Olympic Swimming 2024: Women's 100M Freestyle Medal Winners, Times and Results

Joe TanseyJul 31, 2024

Sarah Sjöström delivered one of the most shocking results so far in the 2024 Summer Olympics swimming events.

The 30-year-old Swede captured the women's 100-meter freestyle from Lane 7 to upset Australia's Mollie O'Callaghan, who entered as the favorite.

Torri Huske continued her incredible Olympics for the United States with a silver-medal performance.

Hong Kong's Siobhan Haughey finished in front of O'Callaghan to deny Australia of any medals in an event it was expected to get at least one podium finish.

Results

1. Sarah Sjöström (Sweden) - 52.16 seconds

2. Torri Huske (United States) - 52.29

3. Siobhan Haughey (Hong Kong) - 52.33

4. Mollie O'Callaghan (Australia) - 52.34

5. Shayna Jack (Australia) - 52.72

6. Yang Junxuan (China) - 52.82

7. Marrit Steenbergen (Netherlands) - 52.83

8. Gretchen Walsh (United States) - 53.04

Sjöström's win was surprising because she qualified well behind O'Callaghan, Haughey and a few others, which led to an outside start in Lane 7.

Maybe some people should have seen this coming, though, since the Swede is still the world-record holder. She set that record in 2017, but has still competed at a high level since then.

Sjöström cleared Huske by 13-hundredths of a second in a race in which the American appeared to be in the running for gold.

The silver medal is still an incredible achievement for Huske, who now has three medals in Paris.

Huske won the 100-meter butterfly and took second in the 4x100-meter freestyle relay.

Haughey beat out O'Callaghan by one-hundredth of a second for the bronze medal.

O'Callaghan's shocking failure to medal in the event changed the medal race in the pool between the United States and Australia.

Huske's medal gave the Americans 16 medals in the pool, eight of which have been silvers. Australia still has eight medals in swimming for now.
