US Can Avenge Too-Close Win Over South Sudan

The United States narrowly avoided one of the biggest upsets in international play history when it defeated South Sudan 101-100 in which the latter was a 43.5-point underdog.

The Americans were outscored at the end of each half in their first match-up, giving up 32 to the South Sudanese in the second quarter and 25 in the fourth. They were outplayed down the stretch in both halves and were lucky not to have been defeated in what would have been a humbling outcome given the disparity in talent.

LeBron James led the way with 23 points, followed by Anthony Davis (15), Joel Embiid (14), Stephen Curry (12), and Anthony Edwards (11).

Marial Shayok of South Sudan led his team with 24 points in 28 minutes.

The outcome should be much different Wednesday, with the United States recognizing how close to a monumental upset they were in that July 20 showdown and working to ensure it does not happen again.

The reality is that every team that plays the United States is approaching it as their gold medal game. The Americans are the best team on paper in this year's games, by far, and with that brings the desire for opponents both experienced and not to upset them.

Head coach Steve Kerr said as much after the first showdown.

"They played a wonderful game and the ending was good for us just to feel that. To feel what it's going to be like in Paris and Lille ... a good reminder that when we play against teams, it's the biggest game of their lives and we have to expect everyone to play like that."

James gave props where they were due. "They played extremely good basketball and that's why the game is won in between the lines and not all on paper."

Wednesday's game will be won in between the lines and not on paper, by a United States team looking to prove that near devastating slip-up was the exception, not the rule.
