Joe TanseyJul 30, 2024

Ireland's Daniel Wiffen fended off a late surge by Bobby Finke of the United States to win the men's 800-meter freestyle.

Wiffen set an Olympic record of 7:38.19 to earn Ireland's first gold medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics.

Finke almost replicated a push to gold that he produced at the Tokyo Olympics. He came up 55-hundredths of a second short of earning his second gold medal.

2. Bobby Finke (United States) - 7:38.75

T5. David Aubry (France) - 7:43.59

7. Luca de Tullio (Italy) - 7:46.16

8. Elijah Winnington (Australia) - 7:48.36

Wiffen became the first Northern Irish medal winner since 1988.

Athletes from Northern Ireland can either compete for Ireland or Great Britain at the Olympics.

Wiffen shattered the previous Olympic record held by Ukraine's Mykhailo Romanchuk by three full seconds.

The Olympic record pace was good enough to hold off a surging Finke, who came close to earning his second gold in the event.

Finke surged forward during the final 50 meters of the distance event and was able to get past Italy's Gregorio Paltrinieri and into second.

Finke's silver was the 25th overall medal earned in Paris by the United States. It was the 14th overall swimming medal and sixth won by an American man in the pool.

Paltrinieri held on to third place to pick up his second-ever medal in the 800 meters. Italy is now up to 10 medals in Paris, four of which have come in swimming.
