Australia's Kaylee McKeown repeated as the Olympic champion in the women's 100-meter backstroke on Tuesday.

McKeown inched ahead of a three-swimmer pack in the final few meters to remain on top of the Olympic podium in the event.

Americans Regan Smith and Katharine Berkoff finished second and third behind McKeown to add to the United States' massive swimming medal haul.

3. Katharine Berkoff (United States) - 57.98

McKeown pulled off the second repeat 100-meter backstroke win in history.

The United States' Natalie Coughlin in 2004 and 2008 was the only other female swimmer to earn consecutive golds in the event.

McKeown's time of 57.33 seconds set the Olympic record. She was two-tenths off the world-record pace set by Regan Smith at the United States Olympic trials earlier this year.

Smith improved on her performance at the Tokyo Olympics, as she bumped up from bronze to silver.

Katharine Berkoff was three-tenths behind Smith to land two American spots on the medal podium.

All three medalists and fourth-place finisher Kylie Masse were within inches of each other when the race turned at the 50-meter mark.

McKeown did not pull away until the few lengths of the race to continue Australia's incredible run in the women's swimming events.

McKeown joined Ariarne Titmus, Mollie O'Callaghan and the 4x100-meter freestyle relay team as gold medalists in Paris.

Smith and Berkoff earned the 12th and 13th American medals in swimming.
