Host Country France Back in Action
France kicked off the group stage of these Olympic games with a 78-66 win over Brazil, kicking off a run they hope ends triumphantly, with star player Wembanyama standing tall, a medal around his and his teammates' necks.
The 2024 NBA Rookie of the Year kicked off his maiden Olympic appearance with 19 points and nine rebounds against the Brazilian team and will look to replicate that performance against a Japanese team that, at least on paper, appears outmatched.
Nicolas Batum matched Wemby's point total in the first game and added five rebounds, two steals, and two assists.
The team will need greater efficiency from Wembanyama as the first-year NBA star only hit on 7-of-13 shots from the paint and 1-of-4 from beyond the arc.
He can likely get away with those numbers against Japan but as the team advances and moves forward, it will need to sink as many of those shots as possible if it hopes to legitimately compete for a medal at these games.
Especially when the Americans have Kevin Durant playing a nearly flawless ball against Serbia in their opening game.
