2024 Paris Olympics Prize Money: Gold-Medal Bonus Purse for USA, Top Nations Revealed
While getting the chance to compete for their respective countries is a reward in itself, many Olympic athletes receive substantial financial bonuses for medaling at the Olympics.
While the Internal Olympic Committee doesn't provide financial rewards to its winners, countries often give their athletes money for medaling—some countries' payments being much higher than others.
Per Forbes' Justin Birnbaum and Sofia Chierchio, the United States offers gold medal winners $37,500. USA Today's Tom Schad noted that silver medalists receive $22,500 and bronze medalists earn $15,000.

For many notable athletes like LeBron James, the payout isn't much of a needle-mover, but for athletes who are trying to cover the costs of training for and competing in the Olympics, those payouts are substantial.
But the United States' payout isn't the highest—that belongs to Hong Kong by a wide margin.
Hong Kong, which competes independently from China, pays its athletes $768,000 for gold and $380,000 for silver, which is higher than any other country's gold medal payout. Hong Kong has already had two gold medal winners as of Monday, so a pair of fencers just got much wealthier.
After Hong Kong, the highest-paying countries are Israel ($275,000) and Serbia ($218,000).
Knowing the three countries with the highest financial reward, here's a look at a few notable countries' purses.
Notable Nations' Payouts for Gold Medals
United States: $37,500
Canada: $14,608
France: $85,960
Australia: $13,340
Spain: $101,003
Italy: $193,410
Germany: $21,490
While the United States has a set price of $37,500 for a gold medal, some athletes will have a chance to earn even more compensation. Per USA Today's Safid Deen, NFL legends Shannon Sharpe and Chad Johnson said they will pay U.S. track athletes $25,000 if they can win gold at this year's Olympics.
Sharpe also said he would reward any American who breaks a world record $50,000. If winning gold for their country isn't enough motivation, a significant financial reward from Sharpe and Johnson should be.
