China Takes Early Lead in Medal Count
3 of 3
China struck gold early and first at these Olympics, with Huang Yuting and Sheng Lihao emerging victoriously in the 10-meter air rifle mixed team event Saturday.
The duo bested Korea's Keum Jihyeon and Park Hajun, jumping out to a lead it never relinquished en route to its win.
It is the second Olympics in a row in which China won the gold medal in the event, establishing the country as the team to beat for the foreseeable future.
It was the first of two gold medals captured by the republic as Chang Yani and Chen Yiwen captured the top prize in the women's synchronized 3-meter springboard competition. The tandem outscored the American duo of Kassidy Cook and Sarah Bacon.
Yani and Yiwen, winners of the last three synchro titles, defeated the Americans by 23.04 points (337.68 to 314.64).
It was the battle for third place in the synchronized diving event that provided the games their first real drama of the 2024 summer games. Australian Anabelle Smith slipped off the board during her and partner Maddison Keeney's final attempt, costing them third place and bumping them off the podium.
The disappointing conclusion to the twosome's Olympic journey allowed Great Britain's Yasmin Harper and Scarlett Mew Jensen to take home the bronze medal.
