NBA Rumors: Mavs 'Intent' on Landing New Markieff Morris Contract for 2024-25 Season
The Dallas Mavericks are reportedly determined to bring Markieff Morris back for the 2024-25 campaign.
NBA insider Marc Stein reported Friday that Dallas is "intent on re-signing" the veteran even though it has "the maximum 15 standard NBA contracts on their roster after securing a deal with Spencer Dinwiddie."
Stein added A.J. Lawson is the Mavs player most at risk of being cut to clear room for Morris. Of note, Dallas also reportedly signed Kessler Edwards to a two-way contract on Friday, according to The Athletic and Stadium's Shams Charania.
Morris has played for the Phoenix Suns, Washington Wizards, Oklahoma City Thunder, Detroit Pistons, Los Angeles Lakers, Miami Heat, Brooklyn Nets and Mavericks throughout his career that dates back to the 2011-12 campaign.
He appeared in 26 regular-season games and one playoff game for Dallas last season and was largely a secondary contributor who averaged 2.5 points and 1.5 rebounds per game while shooting 33.8 percent from the field and 35.7 percent from deep.
There was a time when Morris was a double-double threat who averaged double-figure scoring totals in five straight seasons from 2013-14 through 2017-18.
However, he will turn 35 years old in September. It is not realistic to expect him to replicate those types of performances at this stage of his career, and the Mavericks know that given his presence on last season's NBA Finals team.
Still, he can provide veteran leadership and a familiar face to a team that once again has realistic championship expectations with Luka Dončić leading the way. The team wants to bring him back and may need to do some roster maneuvering to make it happen.
