Cowboys' Jerry Jones: 'I Don't Agree' with Mike McCarthy Being Labeled 'Lame Duck' HC

Scott PolacekJul 25, 2024

Dallas Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy is entering the final year of his contract, but team owner Jerry Jones doesn't believe that automatically means he will be gone in 2025.

"I don't agree with you," Jones said of the idea that McCarthy is a lame-duck head coach, per Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News. "I understand the term and I understand how it fits. I don't look at it that way."

To say there is some long-term uncertainty when it comes to the Cowboys would be an understatement.

In addition to the McCarthy situation, quarterback Dak Prescott and wide receiver CeeDee Lamb are entering the final season of their deals. Pass-rusher Micah Parsons is signed through the 2025 campaign and is also someone who figures to be in line for a significant deal in the near future.

Those are three of the best players on the team and on-field leaders.

Jones has plenty on his plate, but it's not particularly surprising he and the front office are putting McCarthy in a situation where he has to prove himself. He has been successful during the regular season with a 42-25 record, three playoff appearances and two NFC East crowns in four years, but the postseason success hasn't followed.

Dallas lost to the San Francisco 49ers in the Wild Card Round in the 2021 season and the Divisional Round in the 2022 season. It seemed to be in an ideal position to make a run in the 2023 campaign with a division crown and home-field advantage in the Wild Card Round, but it lost in stunning fashion to the Green Bay Packers.

Green Bay won 48-32, but the game wasn't as close as the final score indicated considering the visitors had a 48-16 lead in the fourth quarter.

It was an embarrassing showing for the Cowboys, although it could give them a collective chip on their shoulder for the 2024 campaign.

They will need to turn that chip into on-field success if McCarthy is still going to be the head coach in 2025.
