Cowboys' Jerry Jones Won't 'Delegate' GM Duties: 'Only Comfortable Doing It That Way'

Zach BacharJul 25, 2024

Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones isn't interested in relinquishing decision-making duties for his team.

"I'm only comfortable doing it that way," Jones explained on Thursday, per Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News. "I can't delegate that."

The 81-year-old has handled the general manager role since he took over the franchise in 1989. He's won three championships with Dallas, although the Cowboys haven't made a Super Bowl appearance since the 1995 season.

Dallas is still a postseason contender, winning 12 games in each of the past three years. However, the Cowboys have only been able to advance beyond the wild card round in just one of those seasons.

Jones hasn't made many large additions to the team during the 2024 offseason, signing linebacker Eric Kendricks and bringing back Ezekiel Elliott after he spent one year with the New England Patriots. The Cowboys also lost several free agents such as running back Tony Pollard, defensive end Dorance Armstrong and center Tyler Biadasz.

The long-term future of several key contributors for Dallas is also uncertain, as the team was unable to agree to contract extensions with Dak Prescott, CeeDee Lamb, and Micah Parsons.

While Jones called Lamb "more valuable than anybody else" when speaking to reporters on March 26, the two sides haven't been able to reach an extension agreement after the 25-year-old set a franchise record with 1,749 receiving yards in 2023.

Lamb skipped Dallas' minicamp in June and is also absent from the team's training camp as he waits for a new deal.

If he returns before the regular season, the Cowboys will remain poised to compete for their third NFC East title in the past four years. However, Jones will need to find ways to resolve the situation if he wants to keep his team in playoff contention for the foreseeable future.
