Rounding Up Eagles' Rumors, Buzz Surrounding 2024 Training Camp
The Philadelphia Eagles kick off training camp Wednesday morning at the NovaCare Complex, kicking off preparations for an important 2024 campaign.
After a disasterous end to the 2023 season, the Eagles revamped both their roster and the coaching staff in hope of getting back to their 2022 levels of success. Nick Sirianni retained his job, but his lead assistants are different. Kellen Moore will take over as offensive coordinator while Vic Fanio is running the defense.
All of the turnover makes this a pivotal training camp for the Eagles. Last year proved how difficult it can be to transition from one coordinator to the next. The franchise will assuredly try to learn from its mistakes and put together a more consistent season.
Of course, the return to camp also shakes out some reports and buzz about the roster heading into the season. From a player who isn't quite ready to return to action after injury to more details on the signing of Saquon Barkley, here's the latest buzz surrounding the team.
Sydney Brown to Start Training Camp on PUP List
1 of 3
One of the Eagles' most important objectives during training camp is to figure out their secondary. Vic Fangio was brought in as defensive coordinator to correct a secondary that was torched multiple times last season.
Figuring out the safety spots and nailing down communication will be key. That's why it's notable that Sydney Brown isn't expected to be ready to go with camp kicking off on Wednesday.
Jimmy Kempski of Philly Voice reported that Brown will begin training camp on the Physcially Unable to Perform list. The designation essentially works like injured reserve during training camp.
The revelation isn't all that surprising given that Brown suffered a torn ACL in the regular season finale. Brown wound up starting six games as a rookie with his most memorable moment coming in the form of a 99-yard pick-six against the Arizona Cardinals.
Brown getting back to playing by the time the season starts would offer another contender to win a role in the new-look secondary. The Eagles have a few intriguing options. C.J. Gardner-Johnson returned to the club in free agency, Reed Blankenship is back and James Bradberry could be making the transition from cornerback.
However, if Browns timeline is looking murky a few weeks into camp it might be time to look into adding another option.
Saquon Barkley Did Not Want Giants to Match Eagles' Offer in Free Agency

The Eagles made a lot of additions this offseason, but none are more intriguing and exciting than Saquon Barkley. The versatile running back isn't just a talented player with the potential to unlock a new level for the offense. He's coming from a division rival.
Barkley's departure from New York has been a storyline emphasized in HBO's Hard Knocks series as they profile the Giants offseason. So the new Eagles running back took some time to give his thoughts on the situation in a recent interview with Dianni Russini of The Athletic.
In it, Barkley addressed the time between the Eagles offer and the Giants decision not to match it. The running back specifically addressed a phone call that took place between himself and Giants general manager Joe Schoen. The Giants front office wanted Barkley to test the free agent water and threw out the possibility of matching an offer he received.
It was after that call that Barkley says he felt his time as a Giant was over.
"It was over after that phone call, in my opinion," Barkley told Russini. "It was over after that because I never in my heart truly believed they were going to match it, or they only wanted me for a lower price."
Ultimately, the Giants did not match the Eagles three-year, $37.8 million contract. However, Charlotte Carroll noted that Barkley's agent played a prank on Barkley initially telling him that the Giants did match it because he knew Barkley was hoping they wouldn't.
These are the kind of summer tidbits that don't mean a whole lot right now, but it's a sign that the Eagles organization has earned a strong reputation with players around the league as they look to remain a Super Bowl contender.
Tyler Steen is the Favorite for Right Guard Job

The Philadelphia Eagles don't have a lot of major position battles to figure out, especially on offense. Right guard might be the most significant one.
The Eagles have developed a reputation for having one of the best offensive lines in the league. Replacing Jason Kelce is going to add a serious obstacle to continuing that tradition.
Cam Jurgens is moving to center. That feels like it's been the plan since he was drafted out of Nebraska. However, that opens up a whole at right guard and the Eagles are going to have to decide on their starter there during camp.
Jimmy Kempski of Philly Voice noted that Tyler Steen is the favorite for the job in a training camp preview. However, he dropped an interesting name as the biggest competition for the job in Mekhi Becton.
Steen was a third-round pick for the Eagles in the last draft. At 6'6", 321 pounds, he is big for a guard. However, Becton is a former first-round pick who dwarfs other guards at 6'7", 363 pounds.
Becton was a sharp signing for the Eagles. Offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland is considered one of the best in the business and if there's someone who can help Becton turn his career around, it's Stoutland.
The competition between Steen and Becton is going to be intriguing. The latter has never played guard before, but given his size it would make sense that his dominant run blocking could make it a successful transition.
