Tyson Campbell, Jaguars Agree to 4-Year $76.5M Contract Extension; $53.4M Guaranteed

Tyson Campbell is one of the more under-the-radar talents in the NFL, but he may not be overlooked much longer following Tuesday's developments.

The Jaguars confirmed that they had agreed to a contract extension with the cornerback after NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reported the sides came to terms on a four-year, $76.5 million contract extension.

The deal makes Campbell the highest-paid cornerback in NFL history that had yet to make a Pro Bowl, and features $53.4 million in guarantees.

The 24-year-old was previously signed through just the upcoming 2024 campaign, so Jaguars fans now no longer have to worry about him potentially leaving for another team in a year.

Jacksonville selected him out of Georgia with a second-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft, and he wasted no time making an impact with 73 tackles, 10 passes defended and two interceptions as a rookie. However, he was even better in his second season with 70 tackles, 15 passes defended, three interceptions, two fumble recoveries, one forced fumble and one defensive touchdown.

It was quite the breakthrough showing, and Pro Football Focus gave him an impressive overall player grade of 82.1.

Campbell helped lead the Jaguars to the playoffs that season, which is where they overcame a 27-0 deficit to the Los Angeles Chargers to win in the Wild Card Round before losing to the eventual-champion Kansas City Chiefs in the Divisional Round.

Expectations were high for both Campbell and Jacksonville heading into the 2023 campaign after such an effort, but he was limited to just 11 games as the team missed the playoffs.

He was still solid in those 11 games with a PFF grade of 61.5, but he wasn't as effective as the previous season.

A healthy Campbell will now look to bounce back in 2024 for a Jaguars team that is surely eyeing another run at the playoffs. Having lockdown cornerbacks is all the more important in an AFC South that features Stefon Diggs, Nico Collins, Tank Dell, DeAndre Hopkins, Calvin Ridley and Michael Pittman Jr. at wide receiver.

Jacksonville now has one of the leaders of its secondary locked up for years and will look to shut down some of those playmakers this season.
