NFL Rumors: Emmanuel Ogbah, Dolphins Agree to Contract After Shaq Barrett Retirement

Following the retirement of veteran linebacker Shaq Barrett this past weekend, the Miami Dolphins reportedly bolstered their pass-rushing depth by bringing back a familiar face.

Cameron Wolfe of NFL Network reported on Tuesday that the Dolphins are signing edge rusher Emmanuel Ogbah. who spent the last four seasons in Miami. ESPN's Adam Schefter added that Ogbah will be receiving a one-year deal worth $5 million.

Ogbah appeared in 15 games for the Dolphins in 2023 as a situational pass-rusher and ranked sixth on the team with five sacks while adding 20 total tackles, two passes defended, an interception and a forced fumble.

An eight-year veteran, Ogbah began his career as a second-round pick in the 2016 NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns and recorded a career-high 53 total tackles as a rookie. He spent the 2019 season with the Kansas City Chiefs and was part of the team's Super Bowl LIV victory before joining Miami the following year.

Ogbah appeared to finally reach his full pass-rushing potential upon signing with the Dolphins, as he notched a career-high nine sacks in back-to-back years in 2020 and 2021. Miami rewarded him with a four-year, $65 million contract extension prior to the 2022 season, but a torn triceps limited him to nine games and one sack that year. While he showed flashes of returning to form in 2023, the team released him in February.

The Dolphins had signed Barrett to a one-year deal in March, but he announced on Saturday that he will be stepping away from football.

"I'm ready to shift my full focus to my wife and kids and helping them realize their dreams," Barrett wrote in an Instagram post. "I've been thinking about this for a while and the decision has never been more clear than it is right now."

Bringing back Ogbah is a solid move that provides the Dolphins with a veteran presence ahead of the start of training camp on Tuesday.
