NBA Rumors: Mavs Eye Spencer Dinwiddie, Markieff Morris Contracts amid Free Agency
The Dallas Mavericks are reportedly eying veteran guard Spencer Dinwiddie and forward Markieff Morris as they look to round out their roster in free agency.
NBA insider Marc Stein reported Dinwiddie is being considered alongside Dennis Smith Jr. and Talen Horton-Tucker as potential guards to add to the rotation.
Morris is considered a "lock" to return next season regardless of how the Mavs choose to handle their guard depth.

Smart's Blunt Game 1 Assessment
Dallas has just one roster spot available at the moment, so the front office would have to do some maneuvering to free up a spot for Morris and one of the aforementioned guards. That could explain the deliberate nature the Mavs have taken in filling their final roster spot, as they'd likely want a trade partner in place before inking a guard if Morris is their No. 1 priority.
According to Stein, Morris is viewed more for his locker-room presence than on-court production. The 34-year-old averaged 2.5 points and 1.5 rebounds per game last season but appeared in only one postseason game.
Dinwiddie played for the Mavs for parts of two seasons from 2021 to 2023. He split the 2023-24 season with the Brooklyn Nets and Los Angeles Lakers but did not perform well in either stop. His shooting percentage dipping below the 40 mark should be a concern as he enters his early 30s.
Smith was the Mavericks' first-round pick in 2017 and lasted only a season and a half with the franchise. He's since bounced around the basketball world, playing for six NBA franchises, including four in the last four seasons. While Smith has found a role as a solid defensive stopper on the perimeter, he remains a net negative on the offensive end as both a scorer and a playmaker.
Horton-Tucker saw his star dwindle in recent seasons after once looking like a draft steal for the Los Angeles Lakers. He spent the last two years with the Utah Jazz and averaged less than 20 minutes per game for the first time since his rookie season in 2023-24.
