Eagles Rumors: Howie Roseman 'Had His Hands All Over' Sirianni's Coordinator Hires
After a disastrous end to the 2023 season, the Philadelphia Eagles overhauled the coaching staff around head coach Nick Sirianni by bringing in Kellen Moore as offensive coordinator and Vic Fangio as defensive coordinator.
On the Scoop City podcast (starts at 13:00 mark), The Athletic's Dianna Russini explained that Eagles general manager Howie Roseman "had his hands all over" both coordinator hires.

"At the end of the day, it's Howie Roseman that has the power now," Russini said. "He always has the power, right? That's nothing new for Philadelphia. But in terms of moving forward into this season, Howie had his hands all over the decisions when it came to the coordinator position."
There was speculation about Sirianni's job status in the wake of Philadelphia's 32-9 loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Wild Card game. The team lost six of its last seven games, including the playoffs, after a 10-1 start.
Sirianni retained his job after a meeting with Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie. He went on to say he was open to "doing some things different" and it wasn't long after that both Fangio and Moore were brought in.
One of the biggest criticisms for the Eagles last season was how stale and generic the offense was under first-year coordinator Brian Johnson. They ranked last in the league in using motion on just 10.9 percent of their plays.
Moore, who was the offensive coordinator for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2023, used motion at the eighth-highest rate in the league (25.9 percent).
The defense fell apart in part because their linebackers were arguably the worst in the NFL and the secondary, led by Darius Slay and James Bradberry, slowed down dramatically. There was also tumult behind the scenes with Matt Patricia taking over for Sean Desai as the defensive play-caller in Week 15.
Fangio brings an established scheme that favors two-deep safeties to eliminate big plays and disguising coverages to confuse the opposing offense. He doesn't like to blitz, so there will be more pressure on the front four to get after the quarterback.
Hiring Moore and Fangio were big swings by the Eagles that indicated they were well aware things had to change from the end of 2023. They still have great talent on both sides of the ball. If the coaching puts them in better positions to succeed than it did last year, it wouldn't be a surprise to see the Eagles challenging for a spot in the Super Bowl.
