Steve Kerr Talks USA Roster amid Debates: 'Can't Go Wrong Picking a Starting Lineup'
Team USA got off to a strong start with an 86-72 win in an exhibition game against Team Canada in Las Vegas on Wednesday night, but head coach Steve Kerr said he's still figuring out how to bring out the best in the team as it gears up for the Paris Olympics.
Per ESPN's Tim Bontemps, Kerr said after the game that he's still tinkering with lineups and plans to test out different combinations in the team's next two exhibition games.
"You can't go wrong picking a starting lineup with this group," Kerr said. "I'm going to do something different in the next two games. We will look at a few different combinations before we settle on anything."
Against Canada, Team USA's starting lineup included Stephen Curry, LeBron James, Joel Embiid, Devin Booker and Jrue Holiday. Booker was likely inserted as a starter due to Kevin Durant sitting out while he recovers from a calf strain.
Team USA's second unit consisted of Tyrese Haliburton, Anthony Edwards, Jayson Tatum, Anthony Davis and Bam Adebayo, and they were more effective than the starters at times.
After seeing how well the second unit performed, perhaps Kerr will be willing to follow the advice of former Team USA and NBA star Carmelo Anthony, who suggested that he would deploy a young starting lineup that includes Haliburton, Edwards, Tatum, Booker and Adebayo over the veterans like James, Curry and Durant.
Kerr noted that he hoped to take advantage of Team USA's size against Canada, but he knows that there will be some players who will be more effective against different opponents.
"We wanted to establish Joel early in the game knowing Canada didn't have any size. We wanted to play Bam and Anthony Davis with the second group," Kerr said. "We wanted to experience what that looked like."
