Klay Thompson: 'I Look Forward to Being Rejuvenated' After Leaving Warriors for Mavs
After departing the Golden State Warriors to join the Dallas Mavericks, star shooting guard Klay Thompson is looking forward to the next chapter of his career.
While speaking to reporters at his introductory press conference on Tuesday, Thompson said he looks forward to being "rejuvenated" in Dallas and added that he believes he has "a lot of good basketball left in the tank."
Thompson spent his entire 13-year career with the Warriors and established himself as one of the greatest shooters of all time. Along with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green, he helped lead the team to four NBA championships.
After his role declined during the 2023-24 season, Thompson chose to seek an opportunity where he could be more of a contributor and signed with the Mavs on a three-year, $50 million deal. He told reporters he's looking forward to the advantages he will have on the court while playing alongside the star duo of Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving.
"I don't think you can stick to me as much as you could do in the past with guys like Luka and Kyrie out there," Thompson said. "That was attractive to me."
The Mavs are coming off a surprising run to the 2024 NBA Finals, where they lost to the Boston Celtics in five games. Dallas had a tough road during the playoffs that included matchups against the Los Angeles Clippers, the Western Conference No. 1 seed Oklahoma City Thunder and the NBA's No. 1 defensive team, the Minnesota Timberwolves.
Thompson made it clear that his goal is to help the Mavs get over the hump and win a title during his tenure.
"I'm not into breaking more shooting records. I want to win, at this point," he said.
Still, it will take some time to get used to seeing Thompson in a Dallas uniform, and he said he's looking forward to being in a new environment.
"It's surreal, but I'm embracing it," he said. "The organization has shown me so much love... There's such a great buzz around the city... I think we're set up for a great run. The expectations are high, but you have to welcome that."
