Warriors' Steph Curry Says Klay Thompson, Mavs Trade 'Still Hasn't Really Sunk in'
Stephen Curry is still getting used to life without Klay Thompson as a teammate.
The Golden State Warriors star revealed Thompson's sign-and-trade agreement to join the Dallas Mavericks still hasn't sunk in.
"Not having Klay, man, it still hasn't really sunk in," Curry said in an interview with Yahoo Sports' Vincent Goodwill (h/t Ben Stinar of SI.com). "Just because you've been doing it for 13 years together."
As part of the sign-and-trade, Thompson received a three-year contract from the Mavericks worth $50 million. His return to Golden State appeared less likely as the offseason progressed, with Anthony Slater of The Athletic reporting on July 2 that there was "little communication" between Thompson's representatives and the Warriors' front office as well as no contract offer before his departure.
He left as the organization's No. 6 all-time leading scorer, making five All-Star appearances and earning four championships with Golden State after he was selected by the team with the No. 11 pick in the 2011 draft.
Thompson spent every season of his career as Curry's teammate, although his production dipped during his 2023-24 campaign as the Warriors failed to advance beyond the play-in tournament. He bounced back and forth between the starting lineup and the bench as he recorded 17.9 points per game, his lowest scoring average since the 2012-13 season.
Now, Thompson will attempt to help the Mavericks go on another deep postseason run after making a 2024 NBA Finals appearance. As for the Warriors, they'll attempt to replace his production with new offseason acquisitions such as Buddy Hield and De'Anthony Melton.
