Suns' Kevin Durant Talks NBA Retirement: Goal Is to Play 'Till the Wheels Fall Off'
It's safe to say that Kevin Durant is not mulling retirement in the near future.
The Phoenix Sun star reflected on his current mindset when it comes to his career longevity and confirmed that he is ready to push his body to its limits.
"I can tap in and roll at any time," Durant said, per Vincent Goodwill of Yahoo Sports. "It's about how many minutes, how many shots I'm gonna get. I just love to play the game. If it's a good situation, if I'm still enjoying the game of basketball, my goal is to play this (game) till the wheels fall off, for whatever role that is, so we'll see."
Durant is a 14-time All-Star, four-time Scoring Champion, a two-time NBA Champion and won the 2013-14 NBA MVP Award. He has remained extremely productive into his mid-thirties, averaging 27.1 points, 6.6 rebounds and five assists in 75 games for the Phoenix Suns in 2023-24.
With his numerous accolades, a fade into the sunset could be been a desired outcome in the near future. Instead, Durant appears to have some unfinished business, which should be a delight for NBA fans.
He is under contract through the 2025-26 season and will be entering his age-38 season when he hits unrestricted free agency. Unless he has a change of heart by then, he should be a highly sought-after player during that period if he does hit free agency.
Until then, he will first hope to guide the U.S. to another Gold Medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics and then will hope to lead the Suns to their first NBA Championship.
