NBA Rumors: Steve Kerr 'Fought' to Keep Warriors Roster Together amid Trade Buzz
Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr reportedly "fought" to keep the team's core together amid pressure from the front office to shake up the roster before last season.
Ramona Shelburne and Kendra Andrews of ESPN reported Warriors brass were ready to make major moves following the team's second-round loss to the Los Angeles Lakers in the 2023 playoffs.
However, Kerr and members of the roster pushed back against making moves, and Golden State essentially played out the 2023-24 season with its roster intact.
The front office has gotten their wish this offseason, though, as the Warriors will look very different next season.
It just might not be for the better.
Klay Thompson exited for the Dallas Mavericks via sign-and-trade, and the Warriors waived Chris Paul to duck under the luxury tax. Golden State has brought in De'Anthony Melton, Kyle Anderson and is working to land Buddy Hield in an attempt to improve the roster, but it's unclear if the core around Stephen Curry and Draymond Green will improve enough to make a difference.
The Warriors finished 46-36 last season and failed to make the playoffs after losing to the Sacramento Kings in the Play-In Tournament.
Thompson's departure marks the end of the most successful era in Warriors franchise history. The end of the Splash Brothers will likely cause more sadness among fans than it will create a negative impact on the court, as Thompson has struggled to return from back-to-back leg injuries.
Still, the front office has arguably not done enough to justify this level of shaking things up. Barring a major trade, the Warriors have shuffled deck chairs on a lottery team and lost a franchise legend in the process.
