Fever's Caitlin Clark Explains Passing Up Late Shots in Loss to Angel Reese, Sky

Scott PolacekJun 23, 2024

Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark dazzled with her passing throughout Sunday's game against the Chicago Sky, but there are some who may have preferred her to attempt more shots down the stretch of the 88-87 loss.

She addressed those thoughts after the game.

"I mean, sure, you can wish it," Clark told reporters when asked if she wished she would have attempted more shots late in the game. "I'm sure there was an opportunity or two for me to probably attempt another shot there at the end, but I trust my teammates… I'm gonna give them the ball every time."

One possession in particular that stood out came with 10 seconds remaining.

Marina Mabrey missed two free throws for the Sky as they were nursing a one-point lead, and Clark grabbed the rebound. While she broke out in transition, she looked to pass instead of attacking the rim.

Kristy Wallace missed a shot, but Indiana grabbed the offensive rebound.

From there, Clark was able to draw multiple defenders her way before dishing it to Aliyah Boston for an open look at the top of the key. It was the right basketball play and created a favorable look for one of the team's go-to options, who just so happened to have drained a three-pointer on the previous possession.

Still, Fever head coach Christie Sides admitted she wouldn't have minded Clark attacking prior to the Boston shot that did not fall.

"I never want her to not be aggressive and take shots," Sides said. "I really thought when she went out in transition after that missed free throw… she was gonna take it to the rim or pull up… would've been a great shot."

Alas, Clark still impressed with 17 points, 13 assists, six rebounds and four steals behind 5-of-9 shooting from deep. She continues to look more comfortable with the WNBA game as she picks up more experience and will surely take Sunday's loss as a learning opportunity.

And that might lead to her seeking out more shots in the future.
