Lakers Rumors: Monty Williams Isn't Eyed for HC After Pistons Firing amid Redick Buzz

Tyler ConwayJun 19, 2024

The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly not expected to consider Monty Williams for their head coaching vacancy.

Shams Charania of The Athletic and Stadium reported Williams won't be "in the picture" to replace Darvin Ham.

The Lakers considered hiring Williams in 2019 when they were looking to replace Luke Walton. They instead hired Frank Vogel, who spent three seasons in Los Angeles, winning the 2020 NBA championship. Ironically, it was Vogel who replaced Williams after the latter was let go by the Phoenix Suns.

Like Williams, Vogel was fired after one season in his new job.

The Lakers replaced Vogel with Ham, who lasted just two seasons before getting the axe after the team's first-round elimination.

The front office's search has been slow seemingly by design, with UConn's Dan Hurley, New Orleans Pelicans assistant James Borrego and former NBA guard JJ Redick being the only three candidates to receive any legitimate buzz. Hurley turned down a massive six-year, $70 million offer to remain at UConn, while Borrego has interviewed twice for the job without making much headway.

All of the tea leaves seem to be pointing to Redick, who has no coaching experience and has spent his post-playing days working in media. Redick officially interviewed for the job Saturday but previously met with general manager Rob Pelinka at the scouting combine in Chicago.
